Mentor Application

What is a Mentor?

A mentor is someone who can be a friend as well as a positive role model for a cadet. They will offer advice, listen, and guide the cadet to make the right choices for their life. The mentor relationship can be the most important contact the cadet may have while attending our program and continue after their graduation.

Mentors must be 21 years of age or older, be of the same gender of the cadet and live in or near the same area.

What is a mentor?

Residential Phase

All Candidates will have to submit a mentor application as part of their admissions packet.

Mentors must complete a mentor application and submit two references. Mentors will also complete an interview questionnaire as part of the screening process. Thunderbird Challenge program will conduct a background check on all Mentors. Mentors will attend a mandatory mentor training. If the mentor is not able to attend the on-site training, a training packet can be mailed to the mentor as a last resort.

When all of the requirements have been met, the mentor and cadet will be officially matched and the mentor/cadet relationship will begin. This relationship will begin during the residential phase and continues for one year after graduation.

Mentors and cadets are required to spend 8 hours of one to one time with each other before graduation. This can be done during mentor and/or home passes. Mentor passes are not mandatory; mentors will need to make sure to meet with their cadet during their home passes if they are unable to participate in our scheduled mentor passes.

Residential Phase

Post Residential

After graduation, the graduate will enter the post residential phase of the program. This is where the mentor's involvement is crucial. The Mentor and graduate will submit monthly progress reports showing the placement of the graduate and the monthly contacts between Mentor and graduate (a minimum of 4 times or 4 hours per month). These reports are required and must be submitted by the 1st of each month in order for the graduate to remain in good standing with our program.
